Fanstastic animated movie called Mary & Max, check it out, trailer links -- the lot.

<img src="http://fredstuff.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/mary_and_max_1.jpg" alt="" title="mary_and_max_1" width="560" height="315" align="center" size-full wp-image-7416" />About two months ago I saw a fantastic animated movie called Mary & Max from 2009. It’s about an unlikely friendship between a little girl from Australia and an old Jewish Aspie guy from New York. The animation is nice and quirky and the voice acting done by Philip Seymour Hoffman and Toni Collette is what really makes this movie great. The trailer makes this movie seem like a comedy but it’s a lot more than that. It IS funny but it’s also really, really sad in parts.

UPDATE: The famous track in the trailer is “Perpetuum Mobile” by Penguin Cafe Orchestra. Posted below for your convenience. Link to video on YouTube.

Typography project video involving Conan O'Brien's farewell speech on NBC. Moving in more ways than one.

Click here to view the embedded video.
Moving — in more ways than one. I love creative videos/ideas like this. From creator Jacob Gilbreath, in his own words:

“This Kinetic Typography project was created from the dialogue of Conan O’Brien’s final episode of The Tonight Show on NBC. In this farewell address, he describes his feelings towards NBC and the situation at hand. His personality exudes positivity and humor allowing this dialogue to describe his character very well. Even through the hardships of leaving NBC he promotes hard work and kindness.”

Even more info from the Vimeo page:

“The concept behind this video is to show Conan O’Brien as a the monumental entertainer and solid wall that he is. Conan O’Brien is and will continue to be a seasoned television entertainer. After drawing inspiration from Lou Dorfsman’s Gastrotypographicalassemblage, this concept was achieved by creating a literal wall from over 60 individual typographic layouts. These custom crafted layouts reference a variety of eclectic type design. The combination of eclectic typography and modern 3D letter forms achieved in Cinema 4D provides a contrast between old and new. This contrast emphasizes time to create a sturdy and timeless object. This solidity and timelessness is the perfect representation of Conan O’Brien.”

Water color animated music video for Breakbots track Baby I'm Yours. Have a look.

Click here to view the embedded video.
A lot of videos lately. I like nice music videos, that’s why. This sort of new (3 months old) animated video was created by painting 2000 watercolor sheets/frames. The video is 2:30 minutes long, that means 13.3 frames a second. That’s roughly half the amount used in video on the net; 30 fps (frames per second) and TV; 25 fps and movies at the cinema; 24 fps.

Breakbot aka Thibaut Berland is a French producer (what else did you expect?) and DJ. I don’t really like the song but I do like the video. It’s nice to see artists using traditional techniques instead of having software do all the work. I know there’s no magic button to press when working with computers but doing a thing like this in a video editing application would have been a hell of a lot easier. Wizz, the company behind the Breakbot video did the post production for the WWF ad that’s currently floating about all over the net. Have a look:

Creative use of Google Wave. A goodbye to the year 2009.

A creative way of saying goodbye, see you later and get lost to the year 2009. Brought to you by Whirled Interactive.

Click here to view the embedded video.

This video is made entirely in Google Wave, “an online tool for real-time communication and collaboration”. I have yet to understand what it’s good for, how I might use it or appreciate it in any form what-so-ever. My friends who raved about finally getting an invite have not said a word about it after their first few sessions. Who knows? I might be missing out on the greatest thing ever, but I doubt it. To summarize this post: Great vid!
