Hipstamatic Disposable D Series

I’m not really sure why I’m writing this post. I don’t like this product — I’ve tried it and I will not be using it again. So, what is it? Well, The guys behind the Hipstamatic app for the iPhone have released a new app called Hipstamatic Disposable, or the “D Series”. The idea is that you have to shoot 24 frames (like old world cameras with actual film in them) before you get to see the results. I don’t get it. Maybe this promo video can explain?
I know that you are supposed to use this app together with some friends but will people actually use the app in this way? I doubt it. I shot one “roll” of film yesterday and today, no special pics just some stuff to get through the “roll”. Here are four of them:

I don’t like the results at all. You get much much much much better stuff from other retro cameras. To be fair I only tried one filter/camera but having to shoot all those frames to be able to see (I’m rambling!) the result made me lose interest. The app is free with additional in-app purchases if you want more film/cameras/filters/whatever. In conclusion; stick with the original Hipstamatic — skip this app — and you’ll be happy! Much more info on the app at iPhoneography (if you’re interested). And now for something weird; links to stuff I don’t like!

UPDATE Aug 7, 2012:

The app is now dead and gone from the App Store. It was a piece of crap and nobody liked it — I knew it all along. More info here if you’re interested (you’re not).

There are other apps that have different effects; this app is not about lots of whizzbang effects. Most are understated if anything. It is about taking your time to shoot a roll, often forgetting what is on it, and the fun and surprise and anticipation of getting them back when you complete the roll.

For regular photo app needs, get a different app; this one is very specifically about recreating the old-school sense of anticipation that came with shooting a roll of film. Most users under the age of 25 probably don’t even know what that feels like.

I added a link to a more extensive review of the app — if people are interested in this app they can click it and read up on all the features. I’m 38 years old and I do remember the old film format. I also remember Sony Walkmans and 14.4 dial up modems. Those were great (and the only option) back in the day but there’s no need for limiting something in an app and present it as a feature.

Who knows, maybe a 14.4 modem simulator app will present itself in the App Store? “Surf with heaps of retro anticipation as your web page loads under the course of 20 minutes!”.

Anyway, I appreciate your comment — thanks!
