Luckily for him — and us — his profession is not in travel guides; he gets everything wrong in this short guide. That’s the point, I guess.

Click here to view the embedded video.
I think I did a post about this with season 1 of Boardwalk Empire — but I’m not sure. Anyway, here is the one for season 2. BTW, I’ve yet to see a single episode of Boardwalk Empire (I’m a bit ashamed to admit). It’s always good to have a complete season — or two — of a TV series in store when all else fails. Some info about the video from the Vimeo page:

Click here to view the embedded video.
I’m eagerly awaiting the movie Prometheus. June 2012 can’t come fast enough. Some info from Wikipedia:

Prometheus is an upcoming science fiction film directed by Ridley Scott and starring Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce, Idris Elba, Logan Marshall-Green and Charlize Theron. The film was originally conceived as a prequel to Scott’s 1979 science fiction horror film Alien; however, the events of Prometheus will not precede any of the characters or storylines from the Alien franchise. According to Scott, though the film shares “strands of Alien’s DNA, so to speak”, Prometheus will explore its own mythology and universe and is not directly linked to Alien. Filming began in March 2011, and Prometheus is scheduled for release in the USA on June 8, 2012 through 20th Century Fox.

Loads of info at the Wikipedia page if you would like to know more, and you do. You also need to see the trailer in 720p or 1080p over at Apple Trailers. It’s that good.

<img src="http://fredstuff.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/prometheus_screen.jpg" alt="" title="prometheus_screen" width="560" height="238" align="center" size-full wp-image-16272" />
A lot of things points to this being a super-terrific film. The director; Ridley Scott (duh!). One of the writers; Damon Lindelof of Lost fame. The cast; Noomi Rapace (Swedish!), Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce and Charlize Theron. Production designer; Arthur Max (Black Hawk Down, Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven).

How different versions of a trailer can destroy a potential movie experience. Movie in question: The Extraordinary Adventures of Adèle Blanc-Sec (2010).

I saw a movie yesterday, it’s was Luc Besson’s “Les aventures extraordinaires d’Adèle Blanc-Sec (2010)” or “The Extraordinary Adventures of Adèle Blanc-Sec” in English. I thought I’d post the trailer on Facebook to recommend it to my friends. When looking for the trailer on YouTube I once again found a great example of how a movie can be completely destroyed when trying to “Hollywoodize” it and make it accessible to a wider audience. First, have a look at the “Americanized” trailer:

Click here to view the embedded video.
It feels cheesy and light. Well, you might not even notice that so here, take a look at the original French version. Even though there are no subtitles you get a completely different feel — the correct feel of this movie. Here:

Click here to view the embedded video.
Am I right or am I right? If this was about two different movies; which one would you go see? I might have skipped it all together if I had seen the “Hollywood” version of the trailer. Luckily I didn’t see any trailer, I just trusted a friend. So, how was it? Well, it was rather good.

<img src="http://fredstuff.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/zimmer_dark_knight_rises.jpg" alt="" title="zimmer_dark_knight_rises" width="560" height="330" align="center" size-full wp-image-8363" />
Yes, Hans Zimmer, the world renowned composer I wrote about not long ago needs your voice for the next Batman movie The Dark Knight Rises. Go to the site and listen to the example audio, then record your own voice. It’s simple really although the chant you are supposed to sing is a bit strange. I’ve not recorded my own voice yet but I will. You don’t have to sing; you can talk or even whisper the chant. If you’re into this sort of thing, I think it might be fun.

Too bad the trailer is of such crappy quality (and the fact that they choose Steve Vai as the thumbnail?!) — all I can say is; see this one if you like good documentaries. The rating on IMDB is 7.7/10 and that’s about right — I’d give it a 8/10. If you didn’t like Lemmy (who on earth wouldn’t) before seeing this, you’ll love him when the film is over. He’s exactly like he’s portrayed, and the way he’s portraying himself. I know because I’ve met him here in Stockholm. Dressed in all black and a cowboy hat with a Marlboro in his mouth and a Jack & Coke in each hand. It wasn’t even in a rock club, it was in one of the trendier clubs at the time. He was nice and took time to talk to people (who wanted to talk to him). In short: See it!

Here you go. Three really good Star Wars documentaries made by Jamie Benning. The creator of these films is just like me; a Star Wars junkie. Each video is well over two hours so you better set aside a lot of time to get through all three of them. But it’s worth it, trust me. The films are packed with deleted scenes, alternate takes, behind the scenes, commentary from the crew and cast members and loads of other fun stuff. I like the fact that they are made by a fan and that this work is credited as “unofficial” — it’s not the usual boring “straight from the studio” PR let’s make an extra buck production.

Fanstastic animated movie called Mary & Max, check it out, trailer links -- the lot.

<img src="http://fredstuff.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/mary_and_max_1.jpg" alt="" title="mary_and_max_1" width="560" height="315" align="center" size-full wp-image-7416" />About two months ago I saw a fantastic animated movie called Mary & Max from 2009. It’s about an unlikely friendship between a little girl from Australia and an old Jewish Aspie guy from New York. The animation is nice and quirky and the voice acting done by Philip Seymour Hoffman and Toni Collette is what really makes this movie great. The trailer makes this movie seem like a comedy but it’s a lot more than that. It IS funny but it’s also really, really sad in parts.

UPDATE: The famous track in the trailer is “Perpetuum Mobile” by Penguin Cafe Orchestra. Posted below for your convenience. Link to video on YouTube.

My thoughts on the final episode of Lost. May contain spoilers!

There, the last frame of Lost, ever. Jack on his back in the bamboo just like in the very first episode six years ago. I saw the final show a few hours ago and I was left with a searing headache — not because of all the lose ends and unanswered questions — but because I cried like a woman during all of the “connection”/”flashback” cuts.

Like many viewers I rushed to different reviews on the net to see what others made of it all. About 100 comments in I became really angry and saddened, I felt that people wanted more, a REAL ending — answers! I have no real say in what viewers are supposed to feel or expect. The reason I wanted to hear what others had to say was really about seeing if others had come to the same conclusion as I’ve had:

WARNING! THE REST OF THIS POST MIGHT CONTAIN SPOILERS. WARNING!

I realized something on my way home to see the show today. Something about the title, Lost. I had this strange feeling all of a sudden — it might not be that the characters are missing in the sense of the word. Since English is my second language I had to check Dictionary.com for this one. OK, here goes: NOT “no longer to be found” BUT “having gone astray or missed the way”. Yeah, that’s it. They all needed to make things right in the sideward/purgatory afterlife-reality, learn from their past mistakes, forgive and let go. Jack didn’t have a son, just as Locke pointed out near the very end. No he didn’t, but he needed to see what kind of father he would have been if he ever had the chance — a father figure who’s vastly, if flawed, different from his own dad. Jin got to be a better husband, Claire found out she had a real, loving family and so on. You get the idea.

<img src="http://fredstuff.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/lost_foot_statue.jpg" alt="" title="lost_foot_statue" width="150" height="150" align="left" size-full wp-image-612" />Polar bears, the Dharma Initiative, giant statues with four toes and electromagnetic fields. These things meant nothing. The plane did crash on the island, the survivors survived, strange things happened. In the end some had died, a handful managed to leave the place and some stayed behind on the island living out their lives. In the show — as in reality — everybody dies sooner or later. The characters who had the strongest, most meaningful relation to each other from the stay on the island met up in limbo after they died. This is my own conclusion and I think it’s pretty solid. When the characters meet up in the “limbo-church”, Kate tells Jack “I’ve waited so long”. Jack, Kate and the others (not THE Others) worked a few things out on their own after death in a sort of purgatory (even though J.J. Abrams said it’s not purgatory — but this was back in 2005 when he also said that the viewers of the show came up with better stuff than the writers) and in the end they were all at peace ready to move on into a glorious cliché of white light. What that light is no one knows. By the look of the stained glass windows in the church, they were in a supermultireligious, anything-goes happy place beyond the imagination of the living.

To be honest, THIS is the last frame of the final episode. It showed up for a few seconds during the credits. Different angles (moving images) of the wreck on the beach. I wonder why they (Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse) chose to include these shots. The plane is obviously there, there are footprints in the sand but the place is empty, completely void of people. I better stop, I’m afraid I’m going to start speculating again – I’VE GOT THIS ONE FIGURED OUT! I really do, I think.

UPDATE:

Turns out that last shot of the wreck on the beach was added by ABC as “visual aid to allow the viewer to decompress before heading into the news”. What a crappy move ABC, I’m guessing Lindelof and Cuse feel the same way.

Amazing demo reel from visual effects company Stargate Studios. Green screen taken to the max!

It’s my birthday today, thought I’d celebrate by writing a post. It’s been a while — about 20 days. But, I’m my own boss and I post when I please. So, let’s get to it!

Click here to view the embedded video.

What made me log in to my WordPress install and start typing? Well, it’s the video above of course! Being somewhat of a tech head I already knew a LOT of stuff is shot in front of a green screen, I’ve even tried it myself on my previous blog. Everyone knows about the use of computers in TV and Movies these days, I mean — it’s not a secret only people on the inside know about.

I’ve seen a bunch of behind the scenes stuff from movie productions and TV sets but the thing is — I had no clue the use of green screen was this prolific. It seems like every damn scene, no mater how bland or insignificant, is shot with the help of computers with 3D software. When I first saw the video I was kind of upset, I felt stupid for not realizing that what I’m watching isn’t… real. Amazing stuff none the less.

Stargate Studios, the company behind this modern day witchcraft is based in Pasadena CA. Some of the TV-shows they’ve been involved in includes; Eli Stone, Mad men, Grey’s Anatomy, Lipstick Jungle, Monk and The Office. The list goes on and on forever but the thing is — these are shows without special effects, right? You know what I mean, don’t you? Sure, there are tonnes of effects in Heroes and Stargate Studios is behind that too — but that’s a thing I can understand.

I just realized that Stargate Studios is also a Visual Effects company. Maybe that’s why my brain refused to accept the fact that these effects are everywhere. They are not special, they are visual, you don’t notice them and I guess that means they did a pretty good job. Haha!
