My supervisor/instructor at the wood shop gave me his brothers old camera tripod. It’s called SLIK 35D and from Googling the name it seems like it was made a thousand years ago — but it’s in remarkably good condition and a welcome addition since the one I already own is a bit on the cheap side (and rather small). The picture makes the tripod look like a mini tripod but that’s just the perspective — it’s full size. It’ll be a perfect companion to my trusty (old) Nikon D40.

I’ve been occupied with something the last few days — I might tell you later. Anyway; new year, new candle holders! I’ve done this design twice before. Wood: glorious oak. I’m doing five of them and I completed the trickiest part today, I don’t even know what the process is called in English — for once, I fail… I’ll keep posting the progress until finished product. Stay tuned. Oh, and you can see the 3D blueprint in the upper left corner of the pic.

“Heaven’s on Fire” was the song that got me listening to Kiss. The Year was 1986, pretty late when it comes to Kiss. I remember it because I got “Animalize” by Kiss and “Come Out and Play” by Twisted Sister from my uncle that Christmas. If I recall correctly I also got “Slippery When Wet” by Bon Jovi. Things moved pretty fast from there, those records acted like a gateway drug into heavier stuff — one year later me and a friend formed a Death Metal band. I took the pic above on the Swedish Christmas Eve yesterday (December 24:th). The UK and the US celebrate tonight — once again, Merry Christmas! Or Happy Festivus as I prefer to say.

The guys behind the Hipstamatic app for the iPhone have released a new app called Hipstamatic Disposable, or the "D Series". The idea is that you have to shoot 24 frames (like old world cameras with actual film in them) before you get to see the results.

<img src="http://fredstuff.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/hipstamatic_d.jpg" alt="" title="hipstamatic_d" width="560" height="316" align="center" size-full wp-image-15290" />
I’m not really sure why I’m writing this post. I don’t like this product — I’ve tried it and I will not be using it again. So, what is it? Well, The guys behind the Hipstamatic app for the iPhone have released a new app called Hipstamatic Disposable, or the “D Series”. The idea is that you have to shoot 24 frames (like old world cameras with actual film in them) before you get to see the results. I don’t get it. Maybe this promo video can explain?

Click here to view the embedded video.
I know that you are supposed to use this app together with some friends but will people actually use the app in this way? I doubt it. I shot one “roll” of film yesterday and today, no special pics just some stuff to get through the “roll”. Here are four of them:
<img src="http://fredstuff.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/dseries.jpg" alt="" title="dseries" width="560" height="560" align="center" size-full wp-image-15291" />

I don’t like the results at all. You get much much much much better stuff from other retro cameras. To be fair I only tried one filter/camera but having to shoot all those frames to be able to see (I’m rambling!) the result made me lose interest. The app is free with additional in-app purchases if you want more film/cameras/filters/whatever. In conclusion; stick with the original Hipstamatic — skip this app — and you’ll be happy! Much more info on the app at iPhoneography (if you’re interested). And now for something weird; links to stuff I don’t like!

Stockholm finally got some snow. It started snowing last night and there’s a thin layer on everything this morning; trees, cars and roof tops. I hope it stays a few days — at least through Christmas. But it will probably be gone by then.

I started making .gif animations a few weeks ago. I have wanted to do my own ever since I saw the Three Frames Tumblr blog waaaay back. I finally sat down to figure out how to do them. I tried a few .gif animation programs but I never got comfortable using them, they seemed limited. This video tutorial showing how to do animations in Photoshop was really helpful (that’s what they are for, right?).

Click here to view the embedded video.
So, I was ready. I needed videos as a source material and I settled for music videos that I found on YouTube. I downloaded videos in at least 720p quality and extracted the frames I needed with MPEG Streamclip. Everything from three frames up to ten and got to work. I’ve collected all of them (around 35) at my Imgur.com gallery page — go chem them out.

Loading them all might take a while if you’re one of those poor bastards on a slow connection. Just let them load and enjoy.

I love the new Hipstamatic SnapPak called "Foodie". It includes the Loftus lens, the DC film and the flash is called Tasty Pop. With a few examples of mine.

<img src="http://fredstuff.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/foodie_4.jpg" alt="" title="foodie_4" width="560" height="560" align="center" size-full wp-image-12393" />

(Oh, and this is for the iPhone… duh). I love the new Hipstamatic SnapPak called “Foodie”. It includes the Loftus lens, the DC film and the flash is called Tasty Pop. It’s supposed to be inspired by a photographer called David Loftus (his site is made in Flash, I refuse to link to it) and Hipstamatic seem to think that you should do food photography with this pack. Well, I’d rather shoot other things — and you know what? It works very well for other stuff.

<img src="http://fredstuff.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/foodie_1.jpg" alt="" title="foodie_1" width="560" height="560" align="center" size-full wp-image-12394" />

It’s cool because it’s got a rather short depth of field so it’s sharp and blurry at the same time. Perfect for the kinds of stuff I take pics of at the moment. Just tow more pics and then this post is done.

<img src="http://fredstuff.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/foodie_2.jpg" alt="" title="foodie_2" width="560" height="560" align="center" size-full wp-image-12395" />

<img src="http://fredstuff.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/foodie_3.jpg" alt="" title="foodie_3" width="560" height="560" align="center" size-full wp-image-12396" />

The SnapPak is a Hipstamatic in-app purchase, it’s cheapo! You can find more pics shot with this SnapPak over at my Tumblr page.

<img src="http://fredstuff.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/nyc_camplus_2.jpg" alt="" title="nyc_camplus_2" width="560" height="377" align="center" size-full wp-image-11110" />
I tried something different with a bunch of photos I had stored on my mac. The pics were taken with my Nikon D40 and transfered into iPhoto after my trip to NYC. I already had a “normal” set of NYC up at Flickr but as I said; I wanted to try something new. I synced the photos to my iPhone 4S and used Camera+ (currently on sale @ the App Store) instead of doing the editing in Photoshop. Mind you, the result is almost over-processed images but I still like the look Camera+ produced. I used the in app purchase option “I Love Analog” to get my hands on the filters “Diana” and “Nostalgia”. I also applied Scenes: Clarity to most of the photos, that produced kind of a HDR effect — semi-tasteful HDR mind you. 54 photos in the set at Flicker, click here to see them.

UPDATE:

Click here to view the embedded video.
I might as well post the video that got me interested in the filters mentioned in this post. This video (by Lisa/Camera+) shows you how to achieve the look in Photoshop — even though it’s much faster/easier with Camera+.
