New Twitter Account: fredstuff

December 25th, 2009

A few weeks ago there was talk on the net about Twitter being hacked. Users were encouraged to change their passwords. I did, and there’s been all kinds of trouble since.

My account couldn’t be verified by Twitter, the old account still works to some extent at the Twitter homepage but the Twitterrific app on the iPhone refused to play nice. I had to make a decision — wait for it to fix itself (that’s actually the advice from Twitter) or get a new account.

I’ve had the ‘fredwifi’ account for over two years but it’s not a big loss to get rid of it, I guess most of my followers are spammers anyway. So, my new Twitter account is: fredstuff. Fits like a custom made glove, doesn’t it? Long live the new and improved account! I’ll change the Twitter feed in the blog sidebar in a few days.

Damn You Palin!

hospital
The pain in my stomach caused by Sarah Palins stupid fans turned out to be pretty serious — I’m at a hospital now. There was talk about removing my appendix. Oh, my middle and ring finger are still there — I’m just acting all rock n’ roll to cheer myself up.

Dear WordPress

August 21st, 2009

moiHi! My name is Fred and I’m a guy from Stockholm, Sweden. I’ve been blogging with a self hosted WordPress-blog over at babyjesus.se for the last four years. It’s been a blast. It had a few thousand unique visits every month and it had well over 200.000 visits in the end. Eventually I came to a point where I felt I needed a change.

I had grown tired of my domain name and I wanted to quit blogging in my native Swedish tongue and start anew — writing in English. Why limit yourself with a potential readership of 9.000.000 when you could reach out to the whole damn world? Just days prior to my decision to lay my previous blog to rest it got infected by a nasty script and/or malware. It was a pain I tells ya. I turned it into something positive since I learned a lot from it. With a self hosted WP-blog security is everything. Believe me.

I did a lot of research since I wanted to try out a new hosting provider with this new venture. My old blog was (and still is, somewhat) hosted by One.com – they did a good job when it came to uptime, it was cheap and the server space was quite spacious with 10 GB for a few bucks a month. Support was fine too.

Then came Doreo.com where I had a test blog up and running for a while. The Doreo guys are great, they provided the best support I’ve ever experienced — quick, friendly and helpful. The only gripe I had was the server space, only 2GB. I want to be able to throw something up on the server and not have to worry about exceeding the limit. I experiment with different flash and HD video encodes and those files need a ton of space. Same goes for high quality audio files.

And here we are. A new blog and a brand new host. As I said, I did a lot of research this time around when it came to choosing a new host. Who won my little challenge? Arvixe.com came out victorious. I had never heard of those guys but they kept popping up all over the place and doing so with some great reviews from it’s users. $4.00/month for unlimited space and traffic. In this case the term unlimited needs to be taken with a huge grain of salt but if you use your disk space within reason there should be no problem. I hope. Oh, and I got a domain thrown in as part of the deal. I was stumped no one had registered fredstuff.com — it’s so simple and diverse at the same time. Now it’s mine!

This blog will be quite diverse – music, video, pictures, apps for Mac and useful sites. I like to try out new services on the web and when I do I will write about my experience here.

Enjoy the ride.
